The Gilbert & Sullivan Society (Torbay) celebrates its Golden Anniversary this year and will be bringing Gilbert & Sullivan back to Paignton where it was performed for many years, dating right back to the first production of the famous ‘Pirates of Penzance’ in 1879.

The Society was founded in 1973, mainly as an appreciation society, but since then it has performed all the operas of Gilbert & Sullivan and has achieved several notable successes.  In 1978, it achieved world-wide renown when it sung all 13 of the published G&S operas in succession; a feat it repeated in 1998. The Society also had the distinction of staging Pirates on the 100th anniversary of its first production in the very theatre where it was first performed.

The society will now be returning to the Palace Theatre in Paignton, on Sunday 5 March with ‘Spring is in the air’! This is a light hearted concert of popular and varied songs and choruses taken from many of the thirteen light operas written and devised by Gilbert and Sullivan, including the hilarious One Act Opera ‘Trial by Jury’; and a rare opportunity to hear G&S music in Torbay.

‘The glorious music and amusing lyrics have stood the test of time very well and still provide wonderful entertainment to many people throughout the world’ said Nigel Hickman, Vice Chairman and Director of the G&S Society (Torbay) ‘It is hoped everyone will have a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining experience on this Spring afternoon and will seek out more G&S in the bay in the years to come’
