Doorstep Arts (Torbay), Beyond Face (Plymouth) and International Agatha Christie Festival present:

Young Writers Project

This summer, young people from Doorstep Arts in Torbay and Beyond Face in Plymouth, will be writing and devising new original work, inspired by Hawa Jande Golokai‘s Zombieland, a reflection on the writer’s push and pull relationship with her home town of Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia on the West African coast. Culminating in a final sharing as part of the International Agatha Christie Festival’s 2018 Birthday Celebration weekend.

Doorstep Arts is a non-profit arts education organisation based in Torbay. We run 14 drama groups across Torbay at key doorstep sites – youth clubs, church halls and schools. We are also the creative education company in residence at the Palace Theatre, Paignton.

We believe that we all make the story happen – that participation in the arts is a key part of working for social justice. We believe that all children’s voices and stories matter and deserve to be listened to. Doorstep Arts believes that all children deserve to be able to access high quality participatory arts and to see (and make) amazing and inspiring work on their own doorsteps.

Beyond Face CIC, is a performance company based in Plymouth whose mission is to raise the profile and visibility of People of Colour in the Arts. The Company engages with professionals, young people and communities in a variety of outlets. We create high quality professional performances which we tour across the Uk, as well as deliver workshops, training and support for developing artists, young people, businesses and educational institutions.

The company was founded in 2015 by Theatre Practitioner Alix Harris, who are after running a series of consultation workshops and working in the city recognised the need for a company such as Beyond Face to exist in the city of Plymouth.

Hawa Jande Golakai is a medical immunologist and award-winning crime and fiction writer based in Monrovia, Liberia on the West African coast. She is an IACF resident artist visiting Torbay in summer 2018. As part of her visit she will also be giving a talk at Torre Abbey Museum at 2pm, Fri 24th August 2018. To find out more about Hawa’s work see https://www.iacf-uk.org/residencies/hawa-jande-golakai/
