SUMMARY:Torbay Literary Festival: John Hegley: New and Selected Potatoes
DESCRIPTION:John Hegley: New and Selected Potatoes \nNew and Selected Potatoes is the spud-in-cheek title of the compilation of 10 volumes of work by poet\, comic\, singer\, songwriter and glasses-wearer\, John Hegley. John will perform poems and songs from across his back-catalogue\, alongside new pieces\, focussing on his educational work and storytelling. Perrier comedy nominated and well-known on TV and radio\, as well as brilliant live performer\, John is one of the Uk’s best-loved and funniest poets. \nThe Observer commented ‘Hegley is to potatoes what Wordsworth has been to daffodils’ There is much about family and foolhardiness in a show designed for adults\, but not unsuitable for the odd nine-year-old. The poet Adrian Mitchell said of him ‘just because he is one of the funniest men alive\, don’t underestimate his dedicated gentleness.’ The Independent described him as ‘awesomely mundane.’ \nJohn will be signing copies of his books after his show. \n \nMore information at www.torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n11:00-13:00 Tuesday 11 August 2026 (Main Stage) £28.00

SUMMARY:Torbay Literary Festival: Roger Lewis\, Our greatest and funniest living biographer?
DESCRIPTION:Roger Lewis  Our greatest and funniest living biographer? \nRoger Lewis has redefined the art of biography. He has written books about Laurence Olivier\, Anthony Burgess\, and Charles Hawtrey. His biography ‘The Life and Death of Peter Sellers’\, was made into a hugely successful film starring Geoffrey Rush. His latest book ‘Erotic Vagrancy: Everything about Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor’ was described by Stephen Fry as ‘One of the best biographies I have ever read’. In 2023 both the Sunday Times and Mail on Sunday called it their ‘Book of the Year’. This is bound to be a funny\, insightful and at times eye-opening interview. \nRoger is currently working on a new book ‘Fog By Teatime: Approximately in the Vicinity of Victoria Wood.’ \n‘Lewis’ prose\, so electrifying\, so funny\, so sharp\, so unsolemn\, always going in unexpected directions\, and with all those hilarious asides. Erotic Vagrancy gave me a week of pure joy’ The Mail on Sunday. \nYou can e-mail Roger question in advance to questions@torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk and he will be signing copies of all his books afterwards. \n \n14:30-16:30 Tuesday 11 August 2026 (Main Stage) £28.00

SUMMARY:Torbay Literary Festival: Louis Barfe
DESCRIPTION:Louis Barfe presents an insightful and hilarious insight in the world of light entertainment. \nLouis Barfe is probably the leading expert in the country on British television\, radio and music in the second half of the twentieth century. His book on the record business: ‘Where Have All the Good Times Gone?’ was described as ‘Indispensable and truly exceptional’ by Q magazine. He has written definitive biographies of Morecambe and Wise\, Ken Dodd\, and Les Dawson. His history of light entertainment ‘Turned Out Nice Again’ encompasses every game show\, comedy and television spectacular you’ll have heard of\, and a few you won’t. \nA contributor\, amongst others to The Oldie\, Private Eye and The Lady\, an hour spent in his company is like a wonderfully funny trip down memory lane\, back to a time when there were (at most) four television channels and people would sit round a TV or radio set together. This is the perfect way to put a smile on your face at the start of the day. \nYou can e-mail Louis questions in advance about any of his books\, which he will be signing after the event. Please send questions to: questions@torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n‘Louis Barfe: the main who knows everything’ Record Collector. \n \nFor more information visit www.torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n£15.00 (£7.50 Early bird if booked by 1 July 2026) \n09:15-10:15 Wednesday 12 August 2026 (Main Stage)

DESCRIPTION:Lady Ann Glenconner Manners and Mischief \nLady Ann Glenconner\, Princess Margaret’s Lady-in-Waiting and a Maid of Honour at Queen Elizabeth IIs Coronation\, offers rich\, sparkling memories from a remarkable life that has been both extremely conventional and unconventional. As well as a huge celebration\, this book is also a love letter to a disappearing world\, which\, in her own words has taught her that life ‘should be faced with laughter\, a stiff upper lip\, and the odd vodka tonic.’ \nLady Glenconner shall be signing copies of her books\, after her talk\, and she will also take questions\, sent in in advance to questions@torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n‘The gossip is stupendous but it’s also tremendously touching’  (the late and jolly-super) Jilly Cooper. \n \nFor more information visit www.torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n11:00-13:00 Thursday 13 August 2026 £28.00

SUMMARY:Torbay Literary Festival: Merlin Holland
DESCRIPTION:Merlin Holland – Oscar Wilde’s only grandson offers his insight into his grandfather’s life\, and most uniquely after-life. \nFans of Oscar Wilde will never have a greater opportunity to learn\, first hand\, about what has been described as one of the most important books about him for fifty years. ‘After Oscar’ exposes the decades of sensationalism and conjecture surrounding the Wilde family. It explores this from both the perspective of the aftermath of his death but also with a 21st century view from a world where many cannot now possibly conceive the shock his trail caused – documenting a century of homophobia within the British establishment. For decades Oscar was anything but the ‘gay icon’ or celebrated playwright and writer that he is today. We are honoured to be joined by Merlin Holland\, Wilde’s only grandson who has travelled to us from France to a part of Devon where Wilde once lived (now Torquay’s Osborne Hotel). This will be a very special occasion. \n‘Wilde’s afterlife remains almost as rich and entertaining as his life.’ The Guardian. \nYou can submit questions to Merlin Holland in advance of this event\, to questions@torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk\, and he will be signing copies of After Oscar in the Stage Left area of the Palace Theatre. \n \nMore information at www.torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n14:30-16:30 Thursday 13 August 2026 (Main Stage) £28.00

SUMMARY:Torbay Literary Festival: Chris Manby and Simon Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Chris Manby and Simon Robinson speak about ‘War Babies’ – the extraordinary stories of the forgotten children of World War Two. \nEach November we remember the sacrifice of the servicemen and women who fought\, in both world wars. But there’s another group of men and women who struggled alongside them. They may not have borne arms or worn uniforms\, but they too faced war’s horrors – as children – and many still bear their own battle scars. ‘War Babies’ gives a voice to the ‘Silent Generation’ those born between 1928-1945\, who share the brutality of the Second World War. Although moving this is ultimately a very uplifting book that will make us all reflect on the sacrifices made and count ourselves lucky to be living in this century. \nChris Manby and Simon Robinson have interviewed dozens of those still alive and will offer a unique insights to what this intense period was really like. Simon Robinson is one the country’s leading social historians and specialises in WW2. Chris Manby is one of our greatest fiction writers (often under the name Chrissie Manby or CJ Wray) and was at the top of the ‘Chick lit’ boom\, in fiction\, in the 1990s. Having written more than 40 books\, we are also likely to touch on the writing process in general\, and as someone who for years has taught on creative writing courses\, do feel free to send in questions about how to improve your own writing. Her romantic comedy novel ‘A Fairytale Christmas’ drew heavily on real life people she met when researching the amateur dramatic scene at The Little Theatre\, Torquay. \nBoth Chris and Simon will be signing copies of their books after the event. You can e-mail them questions in advance to: questions@torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n \nMore information at www.torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n£15.00 (£7.50 Early bird if booked by 1 July 2026) \n09:15-10:15 Friday 14 August 2026

SUMMARY:Torbay Literary Festival - A.N Wilson\, The Wise and Their Works
DESCRIPTION:The Wise and Their Works celebrates the 175th anniversary of the Great Exhibition in 2026.\n\nThe men who inspired the Great Exhibition of 1851 – Henry Cole\, Sir Robert Peel and above all Prince Albert himself – were at the centre of an extraordinary combination of manufacturing\, commercial skill and political vision which made Victorian Britain an unparalleled success story. \nIn his celebratory book\, A. N. Wilson examines the legacy they left behind: their idealistic beliefs about free trade\, decency and parliamentary democracy\, and their ultimate vision of the human race at peace with prosperity spreading\, while poverty and warfare were consigned to history. While their loftier ambitions may not have come to pass\, these enterprising men did leave behind a little known but hugely influential organisation\, the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851\, which still supports industry\, science and art in the UK. Skillfully delving into this rich and fascinating history\, Wilson will take us on a journey into the heart of the progressive Victorian dream\, and where it has left us today. \nA.N. Wilson\, one of our greatest\, ‘men of letters’ will be signing books after his interview and you can e-mail him questions in advance to: questions@torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n \nFor further information please visit www.torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n11am- 13:00 Friday 14 August 2026 (Main Stage) £28.00 \nClick image below to view full festival programme…

SUMMARY:Torbay Literary Festival: Roger McGough – Alive and Gigging
DESCRIPTION:Roger McGough – Alive and Gigging \nRoger McGough is probably our greatest and certainly most popular living poet.  A true original\, he first came to prominence in the 1960s\, as one of the leading members of the ‘Liverpool poets’ (he was a contemporary of the Beatles). He subsequently developed into one of the countries most celebrated poets\, doing much to popularise and transform what had previously been considered a rather aloof form. His poetry is hugely entertaining\, often funny\, and will always make you think. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear a legendary performer. \nRoger will entertain us with his latest one-man show and will sign copies of his books after appearing on stage. SUMMARY:Torbay Literary Festival: Lesley Pearse A life lived to the full
DESCRIPTION:Lesley Pearse A life lived to the full \nLesley Pearse lives in Torquay and is a British novelist with global sales of over 10 million copies. She is easily\, after Agatha Christie\, the most successful writer to have lived in Torbay in the past two centuries. However\, Lesley did not start her writing career until she was 48. Her life\, which is described in her bestselling autobiography\, ‘The Long and Winding Road’\, is one rich with incidents\, setbacks and joys – at least as incredible as anything found in her novels. By her mid-sixties Lesley was living in London\, sharing flats\, partying hard and married to a trumpet player in a jazz-rock band. She has also worked as a nanny and a Playboy bunny. Leslie describes herself as still a ‘party girl’ and we can’t wait to hear all about her incredible story. \nLesley will talk about her life\, her publishing journey and her 32 bestselling novels. She will sign books at the end of the event\, and if you would like to send questions for Lesley to answer on the day\, please send in advance via email to questions@torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n \nFor more information visit www.torbayliteraryfestival.co.uk \n18:30-19:30 Friday 14 August 2026 (Main Stage) £15.00 (But £7.50 if booked before 1July 2026)
