Lettice and Lovage is a delightful comedy from the skilled pen of Peter Shaffer, whose other works include Amadeus and Equus.
Lettice Douffet is the tour guide in an historical house in Wiltshire in which nothing interesting has ever happened. So in order to keep the attention of her bored visitors (and increase the tips) she begins to drastically embellish its historical importance. This comes to the attention of Lotte Schoen, her line manager, and she is dismissed from her post. However, the two develop an eccentric friendship which involves shared artistic values, the recreation of historic events and which leads to accusations of attempted murder and many confusions.
All is resolved in the end, of course, but I encourage you to spend an evening in the company of these two wonderful women (and ‘Felina, Queen of Sorrows’ of course). The play is as dramatic and fun as Lettice’s historical ‘recreations’ and should provide and entertaining evening.
The play is directed by Richard Bearne with the able assistance of James Mackenzie-Thorpe. Richard is proud to recall that, over forty years ago and at the tender age of 16, he performed in another Peter Shaffer play, Five Finger Exercise, at the Old Bijou Theatre in Hyde Road. So he’s very pleased to be involved in this production, especially one which is such fun.
