The Long Mirror by J. B. Priestley

Cygnet Theatre, is pleased to be coming to the Palace Theatre in Paignton with The Long Mirror directed by Richard Digby Day performed by the Cygnet Company in one of J. B. Priestley’s fascinating ‘time plays’.

As a dramatist the prolific J. B. Priestley (An Inspector Calls) has never fallen from fashion but a number of his plays have been neglected. The Long Mirror [1940] is one of these.

Set in a Welsh guest house, over a few hours, the lives of three young people are radically changed. The Long Mirror is a powerful combination of strained personal relationships caught up in Priestley’s own fascination with the seeming tricks that time can play.

Richard Digby Day is Welsh-born and was the first student of Direction at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he was Leverhulme Scholar. He has been director of several British Regional Theatres, including York Theatre Royal, Exeter Northcott Theatre and Nottingham Playhouse.  His work has been seen in the West End and on tour in the UK,  In the USA he has been director of the National Theater Institute and has worked in many American Universities.  More recently he has been director of Fordham University, U.S.A. and in July 2017 directed Ian McKellen in a new one-person performance that was seen at the Park Theatre, London.  He has worked for Cygnet on several previous occasions, directing Dr Faustus, Hard Times & Christmas in Venice.

Cygnet Company are professional actors in training. Working with experts, they develop their work through classes, rehearsals and performances. The Long Mirror features the present Cygnet Company, who were last seen in Cygnet’s successful run of Community Play Fire at the Clarence.
